Academy presents the 3rd Annual Lincoln Park Jazz Festival. Join us in the Studio Theater, at 7:30 pm Saturday April 9, 2011 when renowned saxophonist and Midland native, Dale Fielder, kicks off his new tour featuring the music of the Donald Byrd – Pepper Adams Quintet. On Sunday, April 10, 2011 the 2pm performance, in the Mainstage Theater some of the regions’s top student talent performs with master jazz artists including Ralph Guzzi, Dr. Ken Powell, David Budway, Colin Sapp, Winston MacCow, Jeff Galindo, and Tom Wendt.

Tickets are available for Adults ($10.00) and Students ($5.00) at the box office or by calling (724) 643-9004.

Stardust in your eyes and ears

Kenny is part of the performing ensemble, Ralph Guzzi has created to present  STARDUST “the enduring songs of Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and the Gershwins, with a special tribute Frank Sinatra..”  If you are a 20th Century America music fan, you have to attend.  Please, join the emcee narrated tour, through each era of popular music woven with familiar dance suites on February 25 – 27, 2011 at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center.

Miss America 2010 in PA

The event, held at the Oakmont Country Club, was a scheduled performance. The chance meeting and photo opportunity with Miss Cameron was a highlight.

Kenny to judge American Idol auditions

Dr. Kenneth Powell will serve as one of the local judges for Fox’s “American Idol” open auditions on Saturday July 17 for the show’s 10th season.

The auditions will be held at Tanger Outlets, 2200 Tanger Blvd., Suite 509, in Washington, Pa.

Contestants will sing at least 30 seconds of a song of their choice a capella. Performers will be between 15 and 28 years old as of July 15 and a legal resident of the Pittsburgh area.

Dr. Powell and other local judges, from WPGH Fox 53 and the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School, will select one hopeful for a guaranteed audition in front of “American Idol” producers and casting executives in East Rutherford, N.J. The person selected to audition also will receive round-trip airfare for two (the performer and one guest) and one night’s accommodation in East Rutherford.

The station expects about 200 people to audition, said Dan Zimmerman of Fox 53.

Ahmad Jamal, bringing it home to Pittsburgh

Pianist and local jazz legend, Ahmad Jamal appeared at the Byham Theater in front of a big band.  Showing a rarely seen style, Jamal was joined by a hard-working musical contractor, Mike Tomaro and more of Pennsylvania’s top musicians.  Here are the reviews:

Kenny joins the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra

“Great News for Pittsburgh and Jazz!” At last, the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra (PJO) is back and Kenny is proud to join the  newly resurrected 16-piece band.

The orchestra has received grants from the Multicultural Arts Initiative and funds from the August Wilson Center to begin performing a quarterly concert series as well as other events throughout town.   Sean Jones, co-creator pushed to re-energize  Pittsburgh’s tremendous jazz legacy, an idea in perfect alignment with the August Wilson Center.

I have always been passionate about music, but in college I found photography.  Like music; shapes, symmetry and balance formed a common thread.   Today, my camera is always with me ready to create music for the eyes and imagination.  I have added a Photography area on the site to share my point of view.

Kenny joins the Jazz Flute Big Band

Kenny is selected for Jazz Flute Big BandDr. Powell has been selected by the National Flute Association as a charter member of the newly formed Jazz Flute Big Band. Their first performance is scheduled to take place in New York City on August 15, 2009 at the Grand Marquis Ballroom (Marriott Hotel). He was also named as an alternate in the 2009 Jazz Flute Competition. This is the same competition Dr. Powell won in 2003 when he performed in Las Vegas. Congratulations!
